WARNING: The video below will make your stomach turn. Alex Honnold is either really crazy or the bravest man alive. Maybe both. He is climbing a 1,500 foot wall without any safety gear! One wrong move would lead to certain death.
Imagine the mental control needed to do this. Anyone who has tried rock climbing knows at a certain point on the wall your mind and body freeze. You suddenly realize you are stuck. You can’t find a hold, your fingers are weak. The feeling of being trapped begins to sneak in. The mind sends out chemicals to the body telling it to freeze or run. Most of us in this situation would freeze.
It is a strange feeling I have only had a few times in my life. Once was on a rock climbing wall (with safety ropes) and the other was while climbing up to the King’s Chamber inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. Both times my mind began to freak out. Them my body took over. I had no control. I could not get my body to move. Thankfully on both occasions, after a few minutes, I was able to work myself out of this state and move on. Just imagine being 1,500 ft up on a rock wall without ropes when this happens. I’m not sure I could do it. Could you? One thing is certain, this behavior is not ideal if you care about your longevity.
